Ohio’s municipal tax system

Did you know that Ohio is one of only a few states where municipalities assess an income and business tax…and there are almost 600 across the state that do so?  Some taxpayers who own or work in a business that provides goods or services to numerous communities may have to file 10, 20, or more municipal tax returns!  To further complicate matters, Ohio’s municipal tax system has hundreds of variations in the definitions of income, forms, rules and regulations, and other filing requirements that exist across our municipalities.

The Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA) has been a long-time proponent of simplifying Ohio’s municipal tax structure and administration.  The current system is complicated, costly, and a compliance nightmare for many taxpayers, and as such, the OSCPA has undertaken an initiative to generate a groundswell of support from all areas of Ohio to help our legislators understand that Ohio’s current municipal income tax system is a significant concern and an economic development barrier that is overdue for a change.

If you are interested in showing your support for municipal tax reform, please consider writing a letter to your state senator and state representative expressing your concerns.  The OSCPA has provided our office with a sample letter, as well as a supply of printed postcards, to assist taxpayers conveys their message to the legislature.  If you would like a copy of the sample letter or one of the postcards, please contact our office.
